Rahm is a rather different critter, Scotty. He's not really a product of the Chicago school like Blago is. He's a Clinton Technocrat with a national perspective; Tip O'Neill may have been writing about Bahstun when he said that all politics are local, but it applies to Chicago as well. The Evil Ones are going to go after Rahm on an ideological basis. Alleged corruption will just be a tool used toward that end. We here will know the score on this, and it'll unite Chicago behind Rahm completely. Ideology is something that's considered petty here, mostly because it's non-existent. You have to have Republicans in order to have ideological battles, and we exiled all of them permanently to the suburbs in 1927.

The biggest irony in the upcoming White House? Hitlary is not a Clinton Technocrat. She's Old School Chicago all the way, a veteran from her teen years of the Chicago Versus Suburbs fight. She's seen it from both sides. This is why I supported her over Obama for the nomination. With Hitlary, I knew exactly what I was getting and how much it would cost to get it. People from The University Of Chicago...we can be a little wacky at times, as you can tell from my writing.

Thanks for agreeing with me on Yukon. Of course, like I mentioned before, the real heat will be around another Chicagoan named Rahm. The GOP wants to knock him down as a way of gaining early points, and sadly, many of the left think him going down will pave the way for someone they like.

If indeed the knives come out for Rahm in the near future, perhaps we could use your perspective on him?

That is a very cynical, pragmatic way to look at the world, which of course is what I'd expect from you.

I think Blago should also have realized he was under federal investigation and not been so blatant about selling the seat. If Chicago is really the way you describe it, then he could have kicked back and waited for an offer.

You mentioned Philly, would Ed Rendell have sold a senate seat? I believe him capable, but he's not dumb enough to get caught.

Hey Eric, I think Yukon is an early contender for the YAM award.

Of course, now comes the REAL battle, to see if we democrats can avoid slitting our own throats while trying to give Uncle Sam a badly needed shave. Yes, we do need to hold Obama accountable, however, those on the extreme right are NOT asleep, and the extreme left would love nothing more than to rip Obama to pieces because frankly, if Obama does a good job, they will be out of business. Yeah Nader, I do mean you. We need to keep Obama's attention, lest the DLC try to steal it back..we need to remind him that Howard Dean's 50 state strategy won, but, when you hear people snipe at people like Rahm, we need to know that it comes from the people who still think Nader did this country a service back in 2000.

Interesting... what a few of us here in Australia read into his concession speech was: "That's it, screw you, I'm taking my ball and going home." And when he said, "It wasn't you, it was me," that came across to us as : "It was you, but if I say it was me then I'll make you all feel guilty." It was couched in classy words, but it was as bitter a concession speech as you'll ever see from an old racist.

this is my second election and blame it on my Liberal Arts schooling or my mother loosing her house as a result of medical bills after my fathers extended illness and death but I am on board with you on the Socialist/Marxist State. After being embittered and disgruntled for eight years (2002 High School Grad- I did follow the double-aught pretty close in albeit in a haze of weed smoke)it is a strange strange sensation to have hope in the future of my country and I pray that its not in vain...

Been reading you since before I could vote and its always a pleasure to see a new post and i hope they come more often- my generation needs a new Thompson or Hicks(minus the early death bit)...

OUTSTANDING POST! I could not agree more. I too wanted John McCain, and think the poltical parties had too much to do with the 2000 Presidential Election. While Geroege W. Bush, himself, was new on the national stage, the name wasn't. I still think that if it had been John McCain vs. Bil Bradley things might have been different for the past eight years. But we got GWB and a severe dose of partisanship. Now Obama comes in and I am hopeful that he can heal this country. McCain's concession speech was positve toward Obama without looking down on him. Barack could do well to find a way to utilize McCain's knowledge.

In the end I am with you in the hopes that the right wing and ultra-conservatives get it into their heads that mainstream America does not like to hear them blame all of society's ills on liberals and anyone who disagrees with their "right way" to do things. The Republican Party claims to have a "big tent" philsophy, but they look to exclude anyone who doesn't agree with them. There are many pro-choice and pro-environment Republicnas who care about this country just as much as the pro-life and anti-environmentalists.

Good column. I look forward to reading more from you.
