Well, it seems some time has passed since last I graced the pages of Moodspins with a rant. My apologies to my readers for that, but sometimes life has a way of putting a stop to things like online political rants for a time. In any event, I’m back and should be on a rather regular basis. Having said that today is just going to be some random Election observations that I’ve been having.
Well, first, hats off to our friend Rudy. I really thought he would have a better chance at pulling this thing off, but alas, moderate Republicans are few and far between. Or are they? McCain is now the front runner for the Repubs, and I find that a little hard to believe. I never would have guessed McCain could have staged a comeback like he’s done, and well, of the people left, I think he’s the one that will have the best chance against Hillary or Obama. It’s really not hard to see why. While the far right might not like him (Conservative talk shows love to bash him) but, if he’s the candidate that the Republicans put forth, they will vote for him. Since McCain is a moderate, he’ll also be able to draw some of the more right leaning Dems to his side, as both Hillary and Obama are much further to the left than they are the middle. Might be that the Republicans can hold on to the Whitehouse for another four years. Guess only time and the results of the rest of the primaries will tell.
My real disappointment with these primaries however has been with the media’s coverage of the Democrats race. Why is it that they seem to be focusing more on how many blacks vote for Obama and women vote for Hillary than on the actual issues? Personally, I think anyone that votes for either one of them based on race or sex is A) Racist, B) Sexist and C) a raving lunatic. Aren’t we supposed to be past racism and sexism? Isn’t the point to vote for a candidate that is with you on the issues instead of voting on one based upon race or sex? Aren’t the democrats the ones who are the first to scream racism or sexism when it’s convenient, but then, spend most of their time focusing on these aspects of the election when, in fact, they should be only secondary issues that deserve a footnote in the history books? Quite frankly it’s making me sick to my stomach to see just how far we haven’t come. Elections should be about issues not race, sex, smear tactics or the like. However, issues don’t make front page news… scandal and conflict does. I think our Founding Fathers would be very sad in deed to see what lows their creation has sunk to.
So now it looks like we’re down to Hillary/Obama and McCain/Romney (with possibly Huckabee playing spoiler in there). Granted, while I never expected Ron Paul to be able to pull off a win, I’m somewhat disappointed he didn’t show better. Just goes to prove that Americans aren’t really willing to do what it takes to get the country back on track… maybe if he was a woman or another race… eh.. We don’t want to focus on that now would we? I’m going to offer a prediction and say we’re going to see an Obama/McCain 2008 election. Any takers?
