Shock jocks have been a way of life ever since Howard Stern came on the scene so many years ago. They have popped up in every state and even more so every city so all walks of life can enjoy or hate their humor. Some have gone nationwide and are heard by millions everyday. But in a country of free speech, it seems as if lately the amendment has been changed to “the right to free speech but just don’t offend anyone.”

Opie & Anthony have been suspended for thirty days and are possibly on the verge of being fired. It happened to Don Imus. JV and Elvis also suffered the same fate. But why? Why all of a sudden is everyone getting offended by the same kind of material that has filled the radio waves for decades? (For an audio clip of what took place on Opie & Anthony to get them suspended, click here) I do believe it all comes down to interpretation and insinuation.

It angers me to no end that a conversation went down where the word “rape” was never once muttered, yet it is the only thing being said when the shock jock’s suspension is talked about. It’s because of the actions being described on the show are being interpreted as rape. And since rape is a lot more news breaking then a homeless man saying he wants to have rough sex with women of power, then of course it is up to the media and political groups to make the 10 o’clocks. Oh and before you jump all over me, which you still probably will, I don’t condone rape or anything associated with it. I also know the difference between someone attempting to rape a woman and a homeless man talking about it on the radio from a street corner.

And one more thing…since we are eliminating freedom of speech, we might as well eliminate loyalty as well. Thanks XM Radio for proving how your ability to turn on one of your flagship shows in a matter of seconds shows that you have no loyalty. You don’t believe in even giving them the benefit of the doubt. Sure the suspension may have been merited, but since it hit mainstream news…yeah, time to get rid of them. Good luck with filling the slot of probably one of your top three shows. You have shown that corporate America is nothing but shallow and has only the ability to anger us instead of entertain us like you’re supposed to do.
